"Split," an exhilarating and heart-pounding thriller, revolves around Kevin Wendell Crumb (played by James McAvoy), a man living with dissociative identity disorder, whose more malevolent personalities, collectively referred to as "The Horde," abduct three teenage girls. Their sinister plan involves offering up the "impure" girls as a meal for one of Crumb's alter egos, a superhuman entity known as "The Beast." The sole survivor, Casey Cooke (portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy), is spared because The Beast identifies the scars on her body as indications of past abuse. In The Beast's eyes, Casey's heart remains pure, and he proclaims, "Rejoice! The broken are the more evolved."
The film score for "Split," composed by West Dylan Thordson, marked the initial collaboration between Shyamalan and the composer. It delivered a sonic, ominous, and eerie soundscape unlike anything heard in previous films. Thordson described the process: "I began by recording several informal takes of simple, harmonic bowing concepts with a cellist and violinist. The plan was to heavily manipulate these captured sounds. In my previous experimentation, I had unintentionally stumbled upon something similar and wished to delve deeper into it. The outcome was extremely chaotic, unpredictable, and chilling. It felt haunting, encapsulating an otherworldly, tortured, and animalistic quality I aimed for. I wanted it to evoke the sense of 'Jaws,' foreshadowing the presence of this malevolent being."
West Dylan Thordson is a renowned American film music composer, celebrated for his original scores in productions such as "Joy," "The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst," "Foxcatcher," and M. Night Shyamalan's "Split" and "Glass."
